It was not long ago when a trip to the airport was the same no matter where you were. Gates, airplanes, restrooms, checkpoints and terminals were all there were. Over the years, airports have begun seeing a change with larger food courts filled with the big name chain restaurants and stores that sell everything from souvenirs to electronics, gifts and even art and cultural items as well.
In an age where bigger and more extreme is always better, the changes continue even today with airports becoming even more of a destination, a part of your vacation as opposed to an annoying and inconvenient part of your trip itself. People traveling 30 years ago would never have been able to fathom what airports are beginning to offer today. Although these are the exception in airline travel, you can expect that as years continue to pass, it will become more and more of a norm to see this “extreme” airport, and it will become the new norm. Welcome to the extreme airport.
Wishing For A Layover
Amsterdam – One of the busiest of all airports, the Amsterdam Schiphol airport has way more than a traditional airport offering arriving passengers the opportunity to visit an art gallery or casino as well as rental office space, lounge chairs or even duty free shopping or a guided city tour.
John F. Kennedy International – Full Service Day Spa, need we say more? If you want more, JFK also offers a children’s play area, live bands and more. Only in terminal 6.
Changi Airport – Singapore – Offering guests the opportunity to pay to play basically with a gymnasium.
London Heathrow – One of three airports which offer passengers the option of renting a “yotel” room, basically a glorified mini hotel room which includes bathroom and shower, fold out desk and tv and a bed.
What is your best airport experience? Where have you been surprised at the amazing amenities offered to you on your layover? Share your own experiences with others and get the conversation started.
