Gas Saving Tips For Your Next Vacation

Posted on 05.31.12

While travel is continuing to rise and 9 out of 10 Americans are expected to be on the road, they are also expected to be traveling upwards of 150 miles less than normal. Taking to our cars, we are seeking savings on our weekends by pounding the pavement and avoiding the friendly skies altogether. Although the number of travelers who will be traveling by air is still expected to be higher than last year, we are also expecting to see a rise on the road as well. Despite complaints about gas prices, travel by car is still a less stressful choice than flying for many vacationers. For those of you looking to pinch a few extra pennies and save by enjoying a road trip, take advantage of these helpful money saving tips to help you.

Gas prices are ranging upwards of $3.80 and as holidays and weekends approach, you may expect even higher prices making it important that you know how to save on gas. Here are just some of the many ways you can save.

Calm down and slow down – Speeding and rapid acceleration are two things you will want to avoid considering how much gas they waste. In fact, you can reduce your fuel efficiency by upwards of 30% if you stop and start frequently.

For every 5 miles an hour over 60 mph you drive, you are losing over 20 cents a gallon in gas.

Choose a vehicle for the job – Rather than getting the biggest vehicle, consider the vehicle which may be a bit smaller and more efficient on gas to save money.

Turn down the air – In the summer, we are all tempted to use the air conditioning to stay cool. While it is important to keep cooler and stay awake, you can reduce the amount you use and save over 5% of your gas usage.

Lighten your load – Including carrying in the trunk and on the roof. If you do not need it, leave it. Extra baggage reduces your fuel efficiency and items outside your vehicle increase drag and reduce efficiency as well.

Cruise – This goes along with the fast and slow acceleration, but when the roads are dry, consider the cruise as you can reduce consumption.

Make stops all at once as a cold car is an inefficient car.

Keep your tires inflated and your car tuned.
