Years ago, hotels included services and amenities with the cost of actually renting your room. Some still do, but others have found more and more services with which to charge extra, thereby nickle and diming you throughout the duration of your stay. From towels to internet or even a bottle of water, a common complaint of travelers are these and a variety of other fees associated with their time at a hotel. As an informed traveler, it is your job to be vigilant and do your part to make sure that you do not get taken by these fees associated with your hotel or motel. If all else fails, ask before you take that bottle from the minibar or that towel off the rack at the pool, you could save yourself from a common complaint, and a huge bill when all is said and done.
To further help you avoid this complaint, take a look at some of the more common fees you may incur on your next visit to accommodations worldwide.
Pool Towels – Yep, even a towel may cost you money, not just to take, but to use. Try to bring a towel with you so that you can avoid this inconvenience.
Water – If you arrive to your hotel room with a mini-fridge that is already conveniently stocked with fresh water, sodas or snacks, be advised that you will most certainly be paying, and not just a little, for this convenience. Your bottle of water in fact, can be upwards of 5 dollars per bottle! Bring some quarters and walk down the hallway to the machine to avoid this fee.
Shuttle service – Unless it specifically says that it is free, do not assume, as more and more hotels have begun charging for this once free service.
Cancellation Policies – Know them before you book your hotel or you may be paying more than you expected if something happens to your flight. In addition, many hotels also charge extra for early and late check-in so if you have any concerns, ask before you find yourself stuck with this bill.
Internet fees – Ask first. The convenience of having wireless internet can be found just about anywhere now, so ask yourself first if it is worth it or if the cafe with free wireless next door is enough.
It is required that all fees be posted and or written somewhere that you as a consumer can find them, so be vigilant, it is your right to know and your obligation as well.
