Some of the more common travel scams which you may see when you travel are simply a case of you not using your common sense. People may try to take advantage of you not knowing. As an informed traveler, aware of your surroundings and the unexpected, you can enhance your experience while you travel. Tradewinds Vacations would like to discuss with you some of the common schemes that you may encounter in order to avoid complaints when you travel.
Fake police – You are walking down the street while traveling abroad and are approached by what appears to be an officer of the law. The ask you for your passport and after looking at it, inform you that you have an issue and need to come with them. They then inform you that if you simply pay them the fine, you will be free to go and the issue will go away. You give them the money and have now become a victim of a travel scheme. The way to avoid this is to simply ask for credentials and ensure that you never give anyone cash as a way to get out of trouble. Real police would not ask for cash to pay off a fine on the spot. Avoid this complaint by being vigilant and informed.
Airport taxis – Inflated fees, out of the way trip to raise fares and other issues may arise if you choose to travel in an unlicensed cab. Those who would like to avoid this complaint should remember that if you choose to ride in a taxi, never choose a car that is not showing proper credentials.
Establishment Closed – You get in a cab and tell them to take you to a hotel so that you may check in. You suggest where you would like to stay and they take you to a different hotel saying that it will be cheaper and is a better choice. You thank the driver thinking that you have been given a big favor only to find out later that the price was not cheaper and you would have better off with your original hotel. To top it off, your driver was part of a scam and was given money for their part in your loss. To avoid this issue, it is simpler to just book your accommodations before you go and be careful who you trust when traveling in and outside of the United States.
It is always in your best interest to be vigilant in every decision you make you travel outside of your normal routine. Remember, people are generally not out to harm you, but it is best to simply be prepared and avoid becoming an easy target when you travel.
